April Ross

April Ross is only one of the beach volleyball athletes to win medals at least twice in an Olympics. Alix Klineman is a new Olympian who will be joining the team in Tokyo. Ross also hopes to get her very first Olympic gold. As she turns 39, it could be Ross' last chance to take home the gold medal at an Olympics. However, she is convinced of winning top awards. Ross said on NBC Boston: "If we do our best and even if we just play well I'm sure we'll win the gold medal." That's why I'm taking a little bit of luck also. Ross was born in 1982 in Costa Mesa California where she resided with her parents and her sister. Ross played in numerous activities while at Newport Harbor High School. While a prep student she was a participant in the indoor game of volleyball, as well as basketball as well as running track. She clearly was the top in the game of indoor volleyball. Her college biography states that she was an outside hitter, middle blocker and setter throughout her volleyball time during high school. In recognition of her work, she was honored as the 1999 Gatorade Champion of Champions Circle of Champions Player of the Year. Additionally, in 2000, she was recognized as the Orange County Athlete of the Year for volleyball. Ross is working with Klineman from 2017. However, Ross's beach game was well-established long before this. In reality, she was a winner of several major championships while playing with two different partners, among them a volleyball icon. For six years from 2007-2013 she played alongside Jennifer Kessy who more recently served as her and Klineman's coach. Alongside Kessy Ross, she was a major force in the world circuit, winning an international title in 2009. In 2012, the duo were awarded silver medals at the London Olympic Games. Misty Maytreanor (Jennings) and Misty Maytreanor took home gold beating them to it. Ross Jennings was Walsh Jennings partner in fate after Maytreanor's retirement. Together, they won bronze medals in beach volleyball for the Rio Olympics in the year 2016. Ross was a Trojans player for the USC throughout her college the years prior to her professional career. Ross had an impressive run during her time in college. When she was a freshman at the school in 2000 she played her way to Pac-10 as well as NCAA Freshman of the Year honors and earned an All-American. In 2000, her Trojans were also able to make it to the Final Four. The Trojans were devastated through a tragedy in her life during her sophomore years, yet she went on to be an All-American again. In her last two seasons as a player, she led the Trojans to the summit netting consecutive national championships. As an individual, she cemented her place as a legend when she won the Honda Sports Award for 2003-04. This award was given to the most outstanding female college volleyball players across the United States. Ross studied at USC in International Relations. Sadly, Ross mom Margie never got to see her daughter ascend to the very top of beach volleyball fame. As of 2001, when Ross was in her sophomore year in USC her mother passed away due to breast cancer. In the aftermath, Ross remains close to her deceased parent. Margie has been an inspiration in her life and on the beach.
